This year’s host gardens run the length of the Bay Area, from San Jose to Napa. They also represent the many different styles of Bay-Friendly; you will find urban homesteads with goats, chickens, and vegetables, hillside collector’s gardens with amazing views, and large lots with acres of growing space. The host gardeners themselves are a diverse group that includes permaculturists, native plant enthusiasts, do-it-yourselfers, and professional landscapers.

Find out more information, view their web site.

City of San Jose Redistricting Underway

Every 10 years, after new population figures from the decennial census are released by the U.S. Census Bureau, San Jose establishes new City Council District boundaries. These boundaries determine which Council District represents each resident, and ensures equal representation for San Jose citizens.

To provide maximum community input on redistricting issues and interests, public meetings will be held in the coming months at various locations in the City. Please check this web site for information and updates as they become available.

Summary statistics are included in a series of tables/links listed below.

*Table 2 (Revised): Redistricting Implications
*Table 3 (Revised): Population and Housing Growth

Opportunity for input into Lincoln Avenue: Tonight

The Willow Glen Business Association will be hosting a community meeting to gather input for Design Guidelines being developed for Lincoln Avenue within the Willow Glen Community Benefit District. The meeting is on Monday, April 18th 6:30pm to 8pm at the Willow Glen Library, 1157 Minnesota Avenue. Many neighbors attended the first phase of this project and provided input into the design standards. This meeting is for phase two – the design guidelines project.

The purpose of this project is to preserve the unique character of Downtown Willow Glen by fostering a pedestrian-friendly environment that promotes the district's businesses on a local and regional level. It is important to note that this project was not brought on as a revitalization effort, but as an opportunity for the community to develop planning tools to reflect the values, character, and traditions of Willow Glen.

Please drop in anytime during this workshop to learn more about WGBA’s proposed guidelines for Downtown Willow Glen. Light refreshments will be provided.

Shade your house and sidewalk with a free tree

2003 tree planting in the neighborhood
The North Willow Glen Neighborhood Association is looking for households that would like to obtain a free street tree. If at least 10 households in our neighborhood want trees, NWGNA can partner with Our City Forest, a local nonprofit group, to plant a free tree in the parking strip front of your house.

What do you have to do to obtain a free street tree?

1. Apply for a street tree from Our City Forest by April 30. Our City Forest uses a standard application. The application asks you to commit to take care of the street tree that’s planted in front of your house. You will need to give the street tree regular water until so that its roots can become established and grow up healthy. This is especially important during the summer.

2. Be available on tree planting day. NWGNA estimates that planting will take place on a Saturday in early June. On that day, volunteers will dig a hole in the parking strip in front of your house and plant the tree. If you want, you can help with the planting but it is not a requirement.

If you are interested in applying for a free street tree, contact Kim at 408-947-1159 or kim.karcher@yahoo.com ASAP to obtain an application. You will be asked to complete the application and return it to Kim by April 30. All applications from our neighborhood will be batched and given to Our City Forest. NWGNA will know by May 1 whether there is enough interest to partner with Our City Forest. If there is enough interest, NWGNA will tell you before the end of May when the planting date will be.

Note: A limited number of households may be eligible for free concrete removal to enable tree planting. Once NWGNA knows the number of households that are interested in obtaining trees, NWGNA will be able to confirm whether concrete removal is possible.
