Lost elder dog

From a family in the neighborhood: "Our elderly (16) terrier-Aussie mix has gone astray. About 21 lbs, knee-high, grey-white-tan, no tail. Pointy ears, spindly legs. Name is Pepper, but she is now pretty much deaf and quite poor of sight. The area is WG Way, Bird Ave, Creek Drive, and the Gaudalupe River but may be more extensive. She may have been gone for a few hours. She has a black+patterned collar and is chipped. Looks younger than her years."

Call Dave at 408-286-3935 if you see her.

Please help save neighborhood CAP grants

Neighborhoods throughout San Jose need your help by Thursday, March 17

Neighborhood associations city-wide depend upon small Community Action & Pride Grants (CAP Grants) to help keep San Jose safe, clean, and engaged. Many neighborhood groups would flounder and disappear without their small CAP grants.

Last year, you helped save CAP grants for neighborhood associations throughout San Jose. Please take a quick moment to submit an online petition to remind the Mayor and City Council to save CAP grants through June 2014.

The deadline for the petition is Thursday, March 17 because Mayor Reed will issue his budget message on March 18.

Last year, 200 San Jose residents responded and helped ensure that CAP Grants continued to help neighborhoods. To see what CAP grants help support, watch the short "Safe and Strong Neighborhood" video from the mayor's recent Gang and Crime Prevention Summit.

I-280 restriping this week, Bird Ave project soon

From Gary Richards, Roadshow columnist in the Mercury News about I-280's faded lane markers:

Crews will be striping this section of freeway beginning Monday with work taking about two weeks.

And, about Bird Avenue between Willow and Minnesota:

The San Jose Water Co. is currently designing a water main replacement project on Bird between Willow Street and Minnesota Avenue and on Cristina Avenue between Bird and Minnesota. This work could be completed in July. Then the city will sweep in and install sanitary and storm sewer lines, and replace most of the pavement on Bird between Minnesota and Cristina.

Memorial for slain officers moved to HP Pavilion

From the Mercury News:

With thousands of uniformed and civilian mourners expected to attend a memorial service for the two slain Santa Cruz police officers, organizers have moved the event from a 4,000-capacity venue in Santa Cruz to the HP Pavilion near downtown San Jose, which can seat up to 20,000.
Santa Cruz Deputy Chief Steve Clark police announced the new location on Friday, saying the change was needed to accommodate the expected uniformed and civilian mourners for Sgt. Loran "Butch" Baker, 51, and Officer Elizabeth Butler, 38.
"Local options simply did not have enough room to hold all the love and support for these officers and would have forced the venues to be split in up to four different locations," he wrote in a statement. "We want to afford everyone the opportunity to honor these heroes and remember them together."
Clark acknowledged that it may be inconvenient for Santa Cruz residents, but "we and the families believe this change provides the best opportunity to properly honor our officers and their families."

Judge dismisses high-speed rail case

From the Mercury News:

Nearly five years after Peninsula cities first sued to block California's high-speed train from running along the Caltrain corridor, a judge has dismissed the case in a long-awaited victory for bullet train backers.
Sacramento Superior Court Judge Michael Kenny's ruling, released Thursday, means that the state finally proved it was legally correct in December 2007 when it decided to send its planned $69 billion high-speed rail network up the Pacheco Pass from the Central Valley, zipping bullet trains from San Jose to San Francisco. An alternative plan that environmentalists and some Peninsula cities preferred would have sent the trains up a longer East Bay route through the Altamont Pass.
Officials of the California High-Speed Rail Authority breathed a sigh of relief as they head toward a groundbreaking on the controversial project in the Central Valley as soon as July.
