Earth Day Neighborhood Clean Up
This is a reminder that our Earth Day Neighborhood Clean Up effort is right around the corner. Your North Willow Glen
Neighborhood Association is hosting a neighborhood maintenance and
barbecue lunch on April 22, Earth Day.
Meet at 9am in Fuller Park's Horseshoe Pits (between Delmas and Prevost). The signature project this time will be the Prevost railroad bridge. NWGNA has partnered with the city's anti-graffiti contractor who has donated paint for railroad bridges that is a single color of "North Willow Glen" beige. This will put an end to the sad gray/beige patchwork we've become accustomed to. To make that happen, we will need to provide the elbow grease in the form of volunteers. We will provide the tools, we just need you to be there ready to paint. While we're at it, we're going to get the fence and some neglected nearby light poles. If weeding is more your style, please bring your favorite implement and a pair of gloves and we'll spruce up the park as well.
At 1pm, we will set up a barbecue in Hummingbird Park (corner of Bird and Fisk) with hot dogs and beverages for the crew. Bring something to share and enjoy time with your neighbors. The Produce Share will start at the same time so it's sure to be fun. Fresh paint and fresh produce; sounds like a great way to spend Earth Day.

Spring garden. Nine year-old Dove will be there with the kids' table doing
arts and crafts and giving away shiny rocks, desert fake rocks from the
dry-lake bed, and flower arrangements. Free boxes of freshly caught
snails if you have chickens. Bring your kids! This Sunday, 1-3p at Hummingbird Park.

Help prevent or report sanitary sewer issues
The city is working to increase community awareness about its sanitary sewers and how to prevent issues. According to Hans Larsen, Director of Transportation:
Weekdays, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.: DOT Dispatch (408) 794-1900
Evenings, Nights, and Weekends: City Communications (408) 277-8956
More information is available on the city's web site.
"The majority of sanitary sewer overflows are caused by the accumulation of fats, oils, and grease and other debris, such as wet wipes, diapers, rags, and hygiene products, in the sewer pipes."Also from the city about reporting an issue: Contact the City immediately when experiencing or observing a sanitary sewer problem. The easiest and most effective way for the public to report such an incident is to call one of the following phone numbers:
Weekdays, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.: DOT Dispatch (408) 794-1900
Evenings, Nights, and Weekends: City Communications (408) 277-8956

Priority Street Network
The San Jose Priority Street Network will focus repair efforts on 400 miles of city roads. City Council will look to improve a greater number of streets with funding from a future parcel tax, however as of now they have identified the stretches of road that were felt to be most in need. For us North Willow Glenners, we will see improvements to our bordering arteries of Bird and Willow. Also, the trench down nearby Lelong will fortunately get some attention. However, somewhat inexplicably, the world rally circuit on Bird between Willow and Minnesota is not targeted. Hopefully that will be one of the top priorities if the funding materializes. Click to view the Priority Street Network map.
