Garbage, recycling, yard trimming pickups changing for Thanksgiving (and more!)

Garbage, recycling, yard trimming pickups changing for Thanksgiving
If your usual garbage, recycling, and yard trimmings collection falls on or after Thanksgiving Day, your collection day will be one day later during that week. There are no changes to collection service on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Go to www.sjenvironment.org/lookup to find your holiday collection day. Please set out carts and bins by 6 a.m. on collection day.

San José Recycles Clean. Empty and scrape food-soiled containers before recycling.
This holiday season, recycle clean by emptying and scraping food-soiled containers before placing in the recycling. Food and liquid-soiled containers go in the garbage. If they're placed in the recycling, clean recyclables can be contaminated, making the entire bin or cart unrecyclable. For more recycling and waste reduction tips, and a complete guide of what goes where, visit SanJoseRecycles.org.

Recycle Your Holiday Tree
Curbside collection of holiday trees will be on your regular collection day from December 27, 2021, to January 28, 2022. Remove stands, tinsel and decorations. Cut into 5-foot pieces. Set out by 6:00 a.m. Multi-Family Dwelling Property Managers should contact GreenWaste at (408) 283-4800 to arrange for tree collection.

Too much holiday trash? Sticker it!
Buy Extra Garbage Stickers at San José City Hall, Lucky, and Safeway stores.

Request Services with San José 311

Visit sanjoseca.gov/311, dial 3-1-1 or call (408) 535-3500 to check your collection day or collection company, report missed collections and damaged carts, request an oil jug or filter bag, schedule a free Junk Pickup appointment, make inquiries about your account, or receive additional information about City services.

Trees are $23. You will need to provide your own lights and mounting rebar or tree stand. Order with a credit card at willowglentrees.com. No cash or checks are accepted for our block this year. If you have any questions, please contact Bernadette McCann:
bamccann07@gmail.com or text/call 408-504-7141

All orders are due on or before Friday, November 5.

Trees will be distributed on Saturday, December 4th.

Another fun Party In The Park!

We were grateful to have our annual-except-for-2020 Party In The Park on Sunday, lots of fun for everyone! It was nice to see so many neighbors out enjoying the evening and reconnecting.

For those who are new to our neighborhood, Party In The Park usually includes a collection of potluck side dishes but we pivoted this year due to COVID and worked to have as safe an event as possible.

We're looking forward to the holiday decorating contest, and COVID willing, our annual holiday party that's always a fun event.

MANY THANKS to the following people:
Chris Davis for creating the flier
Duke Mantee and the Gold Money Band for the great music
Jeff Mullen of Willow Glen Creamery who donated the ice cream.

Three Creeks Trail Clean-up March 6

Save Our Trails and the City of San Jose will be conducting a cleanup day on Three Creeks Trail on Saturday, March 6. Please preregister via Eventbrite to ensure that COVID protocols are observed.

Two projects will be going on. Wood chips will be delivered in piles along the whole length of the trail from Minnesota Ave to Coe and will need to be distributed. The City of San Jose will provide wheelbarrows, rakes, and shovels to help spread the chips. This work will help considerably to keep the spring weeds to a minimum.

Also, the Clara B. Rees Iris Society will be working in the Iris Garden to maintain that area.

We look forward to a fun, productive day. The registration table will be underneath the Three Creeks Trail water tower feature on Willow, near Bird Avenue. Parking is available along Bird Avenue and along Broadway Avenue.

Digital billboards: have your say before tomorrow

As noted in today's Mercury News, the San Jose City Council will be discussing tomorrow a proposal to allow digital billboards along local freeways. Although the council has received a lot of pushback on this issue already, it's not too late to have your say.

The City of San Jose Planning Department has posted a survey asking for community input about the Phase 2 digital billboards along freeways as well as on downtown buildings. We encourage you to take a few minutes to fill out this survey before the upcoming City Priority Study Session on Thursday, Feb 25, even though the website states the survey is open until March 12.

At this link, look for the "Phase II Digital Billboard Survey:" line and click on the appropriate language to start the survey): https://www.sanjoseca.gov/your-government/departments-offices/planning-building-code-enforcement/planning-division/proposed-projects/sign-ordinance-update-phase-ii

Welcome 2.0

Hello, neighbors! Since we haven’t been able to have our annual neighborhood events in the last year due to the pandemic, and we have new neighbors who haven’t joined us in those gatherings before, it seems like a good time for a little recap. Some of these events may be reshaped after we move out of the pandemic, but here’s a quick rundown of how they have been structured for several years, pre-COVID:

NWGNA Holiday Party - A Sunday evening in early December, hosted by lovely neighbors. Some noshes and drinks provided by NWGNA, others contributed by neighbors.

Holiday Yard Trees - A group order of the traditional front yard trees, led by Pam Shukait

Holiday Decoration Contest - A front-yard decorating contest with prizes from local businesses.

Neighborhood holiday decorating - After Thanksgiving, a volunteer effort to put up garland and wreaths in the neighborhood.

Party In The Park - NWGNA provides hot dogs and ice cream, neighbors bring side dishes, hosted in Hummingbird Park in mid August.

There are other events that occur every few years, like dumpster days, so watch this blog for any announcement of other events.

And, while we're at it, here are ways to remain connected to your neighborhood. We maintain each of these methods so that you can choose the one that suits you best. The content is copied over onto all of these forums with different capabilities to interact back and forth.

North Willow Glen Neighborhood Association list: an email list to communicate within North Willow Glen, bounded by Bird, Fuller, Willow, and Highway 87. Request to subscribe by sending an email to nwgna-subscribe@googlegroups.com

NWGNA Blog (this blog): occasional information about the area, plus an events calendar. http://northwillowglen.blogspot.com/ Subscribe by entering your email address where it says “Follow by Email” on the right column of the blog. Blog entries are also cross-posted to the Facebook page.
