Music in the Glen starts June 21

The Willow Glen Kiwanis are again sponsoring Music in the Glen this year, a series of weekly free outdoor concerts at Willow Glen Elementary School. The concerts are Thursdays between June 21 and August 2.

Food sales benefit Willow Glen Elementary and Turnaround Scholarship for SJUSD.

The series, which has been expanded from six to seven concerts this year, takes place on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the quad area of Willow Glen Elementary School, Lincoln and Minnesota avenues.

Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Willow Glen, the concerts are free and family-friendly with special children's activities such as face painting, balloon sculptures and a petting zoo.

Attendees are advised to bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on. Dogs and alcohol are not allowed.

Reminder: Beautification Party - Sunday, June 24

Signature Project

We will be continuing our work on bringing up the neighborhood Sunday, June 24 starting at 9am and continuing through to noon. For our summer project we will put a fresh coat of paint on the Prevost railroad bridge's north side. There will also be some fence and light pole painting and some light weeding.

Kids Section! 

We know many people out there following us have kids and while you'd like to participate, what will you do with them? Our president, Chris Davis, father of two, will keep your kids safe, busy, and entertained while you get to know your neighbors and help out. We'll supply everything they need, you just bring them in their painting clothes. We'll have paint, brushes, and a fence that is perfect kid height.

BBQ

Get rewarded for your efforts by walking down to Hummingbird Park tot park with a side dish or little snack. We'll fire up the barbeque and have some hot dogs cooking and plenty of shade and water for all our workers.

We'd like to know how many to prepare for, so please fill out this super brief, not at all mandatory questionnaire to help us gauge how many to prepare for. See you there!

Its south side is looking great, as is most of the interior. For our summer project we will put a fresh coat of paint on the north side so it looks as good coming into North Willow Glen as it now does leaving. There will also be some fence and light pole painting and some light weeding.

This time we've got some added flair. We know many people out there following us have kids and while you'd like to participate, what will you do with them? Our treasurer, Lila Kakuk, mother of two little girls will keep your kids safe, busy, and entertained while you get to know your neighbors and help out. We'll supply everything they need, you just bring them in their painting clothes. We'll have paint, brushes, and a fence that is perfect kid height. The park is right there so there will be fun happening there when the novelty of painting and weed mutilation wears off.

Reminder: The Produce Share is on today even though it's a holiday weekend. We'll have some red (actually purple) cabbage, radishes, and carrots on hand and who knows what else. It's always a surprise at the Produce Share.

Reminder: Meeting Tomorrow - CSAs, Chickens, Urban Homesteading & More

Tomorrow is the Friends & Neighbors Meeting, 6:30pm at Word of Faith Church on the corner of Delmas and Fuller. As always, we'll have updates on what's going on. But this meeting will also be your opportunity to learn about slow foods, the localize movement, and efforts to create a community garden in our midst!

Roy Nordblom, green building consultant, will talk about the "eat local" movement that is already happening in our own backyard

Debbie Palmer worked for an organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm for over ten years and can answer just about any question you may have on the topic.

Debbie has also embarked on 'the backyard chicken' thing and is up for talking about that too. Already got chickens? Please come to the meeting and tell us your stories! Let's share what we know.

This will be a fun, informal discussion with plenty of Q&A time. Be sure to bring your questions for Roy and Debbie. It's sure to be interesting.

District 6 Candidate Debate Tonight

The second debate between the three candidates (Pierluigi Oliverio, Steve Kline, and Bill Chew) for the June 5 election for District 6 City Councilmember is tonight at San Jose City College. This is your opportunity to ask the candidates questions that are important to you and your neighbors. There is free parking available in all staff and student lots after 6:00 pm. Nearest lots are A and S.

Suspicious package with threatening note found in Willow Glen

 From Mercury News 9:39 am:

San Jose police say they are investigating a suspicious package which contained a threatening note at a business on Lincoln Avenue this morning.

The San Jose police bomb squad is at the scene to determine if the package found in the 1300 block of Lincoln Ave contains explosive materials, according to Officer Jose Garcia.
The San Jose Fire Department is also at the scene.
Police have evacuated neighboring businesses. Willow Glen Elementary School is under a shelter in place.
No injuries have been reported.
Motorists are asked to avoid Lincoln Avenue and seek alternate routes.

Farmer's Market starts this Saturday

The Willow Glen Community Farmer's Market starts this Saturday. Fruits, vegetables, foods, crafts, and more will be available from 9:30 to 1:30 every Saturday behind the Garden Theater, 1165 Lincoln. Read more about it at willowglen.org.

More than 20 homes are participating in this Saturday's NWGNA Garage Sale Day, selling everything including vintage jewelry, appliances, bicycles, and even a pinball machine, plus lots more.
