Neighborhood decorating starting now

 

We are decorating the neighborhood right now and we would love to have your help. Meet us at the corner of Delmas and Fuller!

We will be decorating the neighborhood again this Saturday and we would love to have your help. It doesn't take very long and it's a fun way to kick off the holiday season by brightening the neighborhood for everyone. Join us at 9 am on Nov. 26 at the corner of Delmas and Fuller!

Creating lighted arches for the holidays

Neighbors in North Willow Glen are creating lighted arches for the holidays. If you would like to create your own, here is a quick how-to.

Materials that we used for each arch:

• One light string (we used this one from Home Depot with 100 lights along a 28.5-foot lighted length)
• Two 10-foot 1/2-inch PVC pipes
• One 1/2-inch coupler
• Two pieces of 3/8-inch rebar cut each into two-foot lengths

Directions and what we learned:

• If your lights come packaged in two bundles, note where the middle of the bundles are so that you can distribute your lights across the two pipes semi evenly.
• Connect the two pipes with the coupler and push them together as hard as you can.
• Attach your light string to one end of the PVC with blue painter's tape
• Twist the light string around with somewhat even spacing, maybe 3 or 4 inches apart with the light string that we used. Have a person twist the pipe from one end to help you quickly twist the lights on.
• Attach the lights to the second end with a twist tie.
• Pound the rebar stakes into the ground (watch for any irrigation pipes) about one foot down
• Place one end of the arch onto the first stake and bend your arch to fit it into the second end.
• Light 'em up and enjoy!

Flier delivery help needed

We are looking for one additional volunteer to help us get holiday party flyers to about 30 houses. It's a nice excuse for a walk, so let us know if you're available.

Celebrate the holidays with your neighbors! You and your family are invited to an open house with holiday refreshments and cheer at Lila and Joel's house at 562 Fisk Ave. on Sunday, December 11 from 5:00-8:00pm. Snacks and desserts are welcome, but not necessary.

Holiday tree orders due Nov 9

Each year going back to 1954, neighbors in Willow Glen have placed a small Christmas tree in our front yards and decorated them with colorful lights with a single white light on top. We’re continuing the tradition this 2021 holiday season!

Trees are $25 due to an increase in transportation costs from our tree farm. 

You will need to provide your own lights and mounting rebar or tree stand. Order with a credit card at willowglentrees.com. No cash or checks are accepted for our block this year. If you have any questions, please contact Bernadette McCann: bamccann07@gmail.com or text/call 408-504-7141

All orders are due on or before Friday, November 5.

Trees will be distributed on Saturday, December 3.

2022 San Jose Trail Count Survey

The City of San Jose wants to hear from you about local trails. Their annual trail county survey is open until Monday, October 10, 2022. Please follow the link below to share your thoughts on all things trail. The results will be used, in part, to guide the City’s trail development.

Become a trained volunteer with CERT

What will you do when disaster strikes? Earthquakes, fire, flood... Become a trained CERT volunteer and join over 700 San Jose residents.

What is CERT? A nationwide organization that trains individuals to be prepared to know how to help family, neighbors and neighborhood in a disaster. Professional responders can rely on CERT trained volunteers.

• Free training to residents and individuals who work in San Jose
• Training offered throughout the year
• 20 hours of classes over multiple weeks via Zoom
• One Saturday in person for hands-on experience

Many thanks to today's volunteers!

This morning, a great crew of 25+ volunteers helped spruce up Hummingbird Park with more wood chips, spot painting on the fence, and general clean-up. Special shout-out to Councilmember Dev Davis and San Jose City Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services for their help in getting this team organized. Also, hearty high-five to neighbors Dan Erceg, Mary Pizzo, Martin Delson, and Bill Rankin for guiding the volunteers. An amazing collaborative effort!

Hummingbird Park Community Day: Saturday

Council District 6 and PRNS invite you to Hummingbird Park to support our curb appeal project. No experience is necessary. All tools and instruction will be provided. Please bring a filled water bottle, snacks, and wear closed-toe shoes.
